Gengenbach's history – From the founding of a monastery to a free imperial city
Gengenbach's origins date back to the 8th century. 727 AD was Benedictine monastery Gengenbach founded, which played a central role in the spiritual and cultural development of the region for centuries.
In the year 1360 Gengenbach was granted the status of a Free Imperial CityThis brought the town economic prosperity and political independence. The city walls, towers, and gates from this period have been preserved to this day and give Gengenbach its distinctive medieval flair.
Gengenbach suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War and the subsequent French invasions, but was repeatedly rebuilt with great effort. The baroque townscape that characterizes the city today largely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
