Gengenbach's History – From the Founding of the Monastery to the Free Imperial City
The origins of Gengenbach date back to the 8th century. 727 AD was the Benedictine monastery Gengenbach which played a central role in the spiritual and cultural development of the region for centuries.
In the year 1360 Gengenbach received the status of a Free Imperial City, which brought economic prosperity and political independence to the town. The city walls, towers, and gates from this period have been preserved to this day and give Gengenbach its distinctive medieval flair.
Gengenbach suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War and the subsequent French invasions, but was continually rebuilt with great effort. The Baroque townscape that dominates the cityscape today dates largely from the 17th and 18th centuries.
